Students were supposed to have been sent an email about an optional anonymous survey regarding their relationships, sexual experiences, experiences with dating violence, and perceptions about safety at ICC during the last 12 months. This will help state officials be more aware of the issues institutions need to address and will help craft the tools needed to address them.

If you did not receive an email or have questions, please contact our Title IX department at Title9@icc.edu or 309-694-8460.

UPCOMING Friday, March 8-9: FBLA Pickleball Tournament

This Friday and Saturday, the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Club will be hosting a single and doubles pickleball tournament for both new and experienced players.

“It is a fun tournament with a guarantee of at least two matches,” says Carson Kellum, who is helping put together the event.

“Not having a paddle is not an excuse, as there will be extra paddles for those who need one,” says Kellum, a member of FBLA and an organizer for the event.

The event will rank players by experience levels. Kellum is the “top seed” for singles, meaning the most experienced player, and Kellum and Ryan Tran are the top seed for doubles.

The funds raised at the event will help the ICC FBLA Chapter attend the FBLA National Conference.

“We are raising funds for our national leadership conference, which is in Florida this year,” says Shriyaan Majety, President of FBLA.

“Say hi! Stop by to learn more about FBLA and pickleball,” says Majety.

Players must join on the first day of the event, as the second day is only just in case matches take too long to fit into the first day.

For ICC students and faculty, it is $10 a person for doubles and $15 for singles. For everyone else, it is $20 a person for doubles, $25 for singles, and $35 for both.

Twenty-three years ago, Kevin Hines, jumped off the Golden Gate Bridge to end his mental pain. Last week, he spoke to a well-attended auditorium full of Illinois Central College students and faculty.

Hines is touring America giving a speech titled “#BeHereTomorrow: A Story of Hope, Healing, and Recovery”, inspiring others to help prevent suicide. Hines said that we are “Here on the planet to be each other’s keepers”.

Wednesday, Feb. 28- March 3: Women Playing Hamlet

This past week, the ICC theater department put on five showings of their spring play, a comedy called “Women Playing Hamlet”. The show had a great turnout, with mostly full rooms and two nights even selling out.

“It is about a woman, in particular Jessica, playing the role of Hamlet and how she’s intimidated about doing that and her journey into becoming Hamlet and playing the role,” says the lead actor Julia Tejeda, who plays Jessica. This is Tejeda’s 26th show, and she mostly performs at the Corn Stock Theater in Peoria.

The show consists of only female actors, even though there are both male and female characters. This is in contrast to the tradition of men playing all of the roles when Shakespeare originally made his play “Hamlet”.

The show has a small cast of six people. Four of those actors have multiple roles, with a total of 14 characters. The cast included Julia Tejeda, Saniya Boy-Morris, Soph Henderson, Kayd, Smith, Isabelle Crane, and Teagan Ealey.

“The cast did a great job of supporting me and having my back the whole time. So I feel lucky to be able to say that and to be able to have succeeded at this role,” says Tejeda.

“I’m so grateful to see all our hard work pay off! I’m so thankful for the cast and crew that worked on the show and made it turn out amazing. Also thank you to the audience for giving us two sold-out shows! Be sure to stay up-to-date when tickets go on sale for our next show ‘Rocky Horror!’” says actor Teagan Ealey.

There will be five shows for the “Rocky Horror Show”, a play adaption of the musical movie “Rocky Horror Picture Show”, from April 18-21.

Last week, the prospective students visited the AIT building, where they encountered tables run by ICC by students and faculty for more than 25 ICC programs. It included hands-on equipment demos, tours of labs and classrooms, and plenty of discussions with ICC students, faculty, and industry professionals.

“It was very eye-opening and helped me see another side of the workforce,” says Boden Nosalik, a St. Philomena High School student. “I got to have conversations with professionals of the trades, which helped me understand the fundamentals and learning programs”.

Nosalik says his favorite stands were for law enforcement and Caterpillar.
