The Swan Chronicles Article #2

Article #2 of 3 in the series:    Keeping up with the… birds? Avian drama at ICC The Big Reveal

The swans in the pond are, in fact, fake. The reason why there are fake swans will be addressed in this installment of The Swan Chronicles.

The original purpose of this body of water was to monitor how water reacts to farm run-off chemicals in a controlled environment, and how it impacts the biological makeup. While the science aspect of this experiment is undoubtedly important, this reporter is more interested in the fake swans placed in the water, at least for today.  Why are they there in the first place?

According to Agriculture Professor Pete Fandel, geese and swans do not get along, so the fake swans are placed in the pond to keep the geese away from the plants that are growing there.  The research would be compromised if the geese were to leave their excrement in the lake. The goose poop would elevate nitrogen levels and throw off the research.

In addition to avian drama, there have also been sightings of a man on a small boat in the middle of the pond.  What more do we need to know about him? Look for the answer tomorrow in the third installment of The Swan Chronicles.
