The ICC Fashion Club will host an eco-friendly fashion experience on Nov. 12 to increase awareness for the club while showcasing sustainability.

Gina Gavino, Fashion Club President

An eco-friendly fashion show is a show that attempts to minimize the impact on the environment by not having any waste. “The fashion industry is really wasteful and notorious for waste, so we don’t want to contribute to that,” says ICC Fashion Club President Gina Gavino.

The clothes are made from cotton, polyester, and other materials that are either upcycled, bought second-hand, or from students’ closets. All of the clothes in the fashion show will be modeled by male and female students.

The club is new, and they look to get more people involved and increase exposure in the ICC community. The fashion show is named “Our World” to highlight sustainability. “We wanted to bring focus to the fact it’s eco-friendly and sustainable, showing that ‘Our World’ needs help and the fashion industry has many issues with that,” says Gina.

“Sustainability is really important because there is so much waste that goes into producing clothes and with how fast trends move these days, people are buying clothes and then a bunch of it is being thrown into landfills.”

Fast fashion is a manufacturing approach that emphasizes making clothes quickly and cheaply in response to popular fashion trends. “Overall, there is a lot of waste going on. It’s important to slow it down.”

Gina added, “We want to show second-hand and slower fashion is better for the environment and can be just as cute.”

The fashion club encourages you to join if you are interested in fashion, whether making clothes, styling clothes, or wearing cute outfits. In the future, the club is hoping to do a fashion show with “not-normal” fabrics, like making a dress out of wrappers or trash.

The show will be held Friday, Nov. 12, at 4 p.m. in the ICC East Peoria Cafeteria. The show will last between a half-hour and an hour, and there may also be a bake sale. Everyone is welcome to come, including family and friends. For more questions or how to join the fashion club, send a direct message to “iccfashion” on Instagram or email Gina at gg621@lab.icc.edu.
