Two SGA Seats Still Empty After Non-Competitive Student Election
Results are in for the Student Government Association (SGA) election, with three seats being filled, one of which was a write-in candidate. However, the secretary and treasurer positions are still open, and students are encouraged to visit Student Life if they are interested in filling them.
According to Abby Lowe, a worker at Student Life, the SGA is responsible for representing the voice of the students on campus, as well as helping out with community projects.
Some of the projects the SGA has helped with include a student clothing drive, getting a coffee company to bring free coffee to campus, and assisting different departments get student feedback through surveys.
The winners of this election will lead the SGA.
Sophia Larimore has been elected as president, and Leon Belmont has been re-elected as student trustee. Keiton Hamilton was elected as vice president through write-in votes.
The election was non-competitive, as only two students were on the ballot at all: Belmont and Larimore.
Leon Belmont, the still-presiding student trustee, is a pre-med student aiming to become a doctor. He is also working to become a paramedic at ICC. This will be Belmont’s second year as trustee and last year at ICC.
“I’m glad students feel confident in my representation and that they decided to re-elect me. It’s a great honor to serve the student interest in this way, and I’m looking forward to another year in this role,” he says.
“Ultimately, I envision a safer and more accessible ICC,” he said when asked about his goals for his next term. “I’d start this by advocating to replace the stairs at campus housing, amongst other projects.”
Belmont does not expect that all of his work will be completed this year, but is still planning beyond his time at ICC.
“I’d also like to continue my work on increasing the accessibility to transportation for current and potential students. This likely won’t be completely finished in a year, but I hope to have a foundation to pass on to my successor,” he says.
Sophia Larimore, the now-president of SGA, is a second-year student who founded the “ICC Community Discord”, the most popular active ICC Discord server. She is also the editor of the Harbinger Student Media and attends the monthly trustee meetings.
“I’m excited for the new opportunities that will come with being president. I’ve always enjoyed helping people and making them happy in any way I can and I just see this as a way to expand on that,” Larimore says.
When asked what she wants to do to improve campus, Larimore said “I love what ICC has been doing with de stressors for students like the therapy dogs and gentle yoga, so I’d probably invest in mental health events for students. Like I said, I want to help students. I’d like to combine fun and help.”
For those interested in applying to become the secretary or treasurer of the SGA, Student Life is next to the Student Lounge at ICC.
The winners of the election will be formally sworn in during the leadership awards on April 24.
