This week, ICC will be hosting 34 events around the East Peoria campus to celebrate art in all of its forms! Everything from pottery to jazz to theater will have representation. There will be presentations by professionals, exhibits, fun little photo op stations, and even live shows!

The Clothesline Project, a sexual abuse prevention exhibit, will be up all week

In total, there will be six multiple-day events, four events on Monday, eight events on Tuesday, six on Wednesday, six on Thursday, one on Friday, and two on Saturday.

Some highlights are learning to take pictures without a camera on Monday, learning the history of tattoos on Tuesday, an open mic poetry event on Wednesday, and #1 bestselling author Joe Chianakas giving a speech on Thursday.

On top of these, this weekend will be one for the books with three huge events! The Student Film Festival will be on Thursday, the International Fair will be on Saturday, and the Rocky Horror Show will be from Thursday through Sunday.

UPCOMING: Thursday, April 18-21: The Rocky Horror Show

This week, ICC’s Theater Department will be putting on its second spring play, an adult-themed interactive musical called The Rocky Horror Show. It is based on the cult classic 1975 film The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

The Rocky Horror Show is about “the story of a newly engaged couple who get caught in a storm and seek refuge at the home of mad transvestite scientist, Dr. Frank-N-Furter, who unveils his new creation, Rocky, a sort of Frankenstein-style monster”, according to the ICC events website.

The show includes a cast of 14 people, but audience members are encouraged to be part of the play, as well.

“You are welcome to sing, dance, and shout,” says Ealey.

There will even be prop bags that the audience can use to interact with the play at certain moments. They will be given a participation script to know when. They will be available to buy at the door. You can not bring your own bag.

There will be two sing-along-only shows on April 20 and 21.

When asked why the cast chose Rocky Horror for the spring production, the cast said, “It’s fun, and people like it! And we are allowed to have fun!”

“Why are so excited everyone to see Rocky Horror!” says Teagan Ealey, who will be playing lips. “The cast and crew have dedicated many hours to making sure it’s a fun show for each and every person. Let there be lips!”

There will be a pre-show costume contest at each performance.

The show costs $10 for students and $15 for non-students. Prop bags cost $5.

The recommended age for the show is ages 17 and up.

Tuesday, April 9: Presentation about Rita Dove, The First Black Female Poet Laureate

Last Tuesday, Dr. Lonetta Oliver, ICC’s Dean of Humanities, presented a PowerPoint to approximately 15 guests about Rita Dove, the first Black female poet laureate.

During the presentation, Oliver also discussed Black female poets overall and “black girl magic”. She offered that the magic is Black women’s “realness, love, and the way black women rally around one another.”

When asked why she chose to present her topic in early April, Dr. Oliver explained the intersectionality because March is Women’s History Month and April is National Poetry Month.

If there is one thing Oliver wants people to know about the heart of her presentation, it’s that “words are how we relate as people”.
