Democracy has three key tenants: free and open access to information, liberty to pursue one’s own interests, and the absolute right to participate in government(either directly or indirectly). These three tenets culminate in the voice of the populace being heard and represented to its fullest. Illinois Central College (ICC) has miniaturized the democratic process, so that the student body, and their interests, are more accurately represented.

The Student Government Association (SGA) elections ended last month on March 30. A well-fought race from all candidates, commendable for their willingness to participate, and lead, in SGA and to bare themselves before the student populace. The results are as follows; Leon Belmont as Student Trustee, Audrey Blair as President, Mekaul Mills as Vice President, and Alexsus Nellum as Treasurer.

Belmont, the incoming Student Trustee has plans to better the food choices at ICC through Peoria Grown, offering more choices for students with dietary limitations and healthier food options all around. Belmont is looking to work with the Board of Trustees (BOT) to lower the cost of textbooks for students who need them most. Belmont is also working to obtain new guidelines which provide students with excused mental health days.

“My motivations are largely just to improve my leadership[skills] and to improve students’ lives here on campus. Play my part to make ICC a better place,” said Belmont.

It would appear that the students at ICC resonated with Belmont’s message since he was elected with a sliding final vote of 117 over his opponent’s 66. Beginning in August, Belmont will take over the role of the student body’s most important representative. The loudest voice amongst a chorus of evolving concerns within the student body and organizations. Belmont will have the opportunity to implement change and improve the student experience at ICC.

However, there is still a place for a democratic soul to participate in ICC’s microcosm of democracy. The seat of Secretary for SGA is still open and the organization is looking for an interested student to fill the position. Students interested in becoming involved should visit the Student Life office located on the third floor of the academic building, room 303A, of the East Peoria campus.
