EAST PEORIA — Towards the end of the year the Illinois Central College softball team (32-14) were firing on all cylinders, winning 12 out 14 games. However, during the final eight games of the regular season the Cougars seemed to be a little out of whack and limping to the finish line 4-4. But it was postseason time and if the Lady Cougars wanted to head back to the NJCAA Tournament, perfection was demanded.

It was a clean sweep for the Lady Cougars in the Region 24 Tournament May 1- May 3. Their opening round game against John Wood was the only one in which they allowed a runner to cross the plate, defeating them 10-2. After that the tone was set for the rest of the tournament.

The pitching staff was immaculate in both games against Lincoln Land, first in the semi- final game with a 4-0 victory, followed by a 6-0 win in the championship game sending them back to the NJCAA National Tournament for the second year in a row.

Objective one is complete for the Lady Cougars but this mission doesn’t stop at just qualifying. Last year the Lady Cougars respectfully placed 4th at Nationals, meaning that there is still room for improvement. “Our ultimate goal is to exceed the precedent by placing third or better,” said Coach Heather Doty.

It has been 16 years since the profound NJCAA National Champion trophy has returned home with the Lady Cougars. Prior to that the only other time they claimed the crownwasin1982.Iffate truly exists and history continues to happen through this divine pattern, than maybe the universe favors the Lady Cougars through 16-year intervals.

The adventure will continue for the Lady Cougars this Wednesday, May 15, in Clinton, Missouri. Their opponent is still undetermined as of now until the last champions of the Region Tournaments emerge. Regardless of who the Lady Cougars draw, the game plan and mindset will remain the same. Win or go home, its postseason softball and only the strong shall survive.
