SKD Slams Poetry at the Cafe Breve

By Andrew Greenway, 4/23/19

As many students at ICC know, ICC does not offer the typical college “fraternity” or “sorority” experience. On-campus housing is limited to the East Peoria Campus apartments, many of the classes offered may be split amongst the campuses, job training facilities, or even some off-campus sites but being non-traditional does not mean non-existent and, tonight, Sigma Kappa Delta wants to make its presence known in a major way.

For the unfamiliar, Sigma Kappa Delta is ICC’s resident English Honor Society that strives to recognize academic excellence for students studying the English language and literature at two-year institutions. They aim to promote education, spark interest in the study of English, and to develop a sense of community among students and those in the surrounding communities. This is the creed of SKD and these are the ideals which led Hope Crockett, the historian for Sigma Kappa Delta, to invite all ICC students, staff, and faculty members to participate in their Poetry Slam.

Held April 23rd, 4:30 PM at Cafe Breve, the rules are as follows…

  1. All poems must follow the theme of Success and Failure.
  2. Performances must last no longer than 4 minutes in length.
  3. Poetry performed must be your own work.
  4. Have fun!

There is no admission fee.

Students are welcomed to come and listen, you do not need to be a performer to participate. A respectful and kind audience is just as vital to a poetry slam’s success as talented and willing poets.

For those that perform, prizes will be awarded to the following three categories:

  • Best Speaker
  • Best Poem
  • Audience Favorite.

For any questions and inquiries about SKD or the Poetry Slam, contact Rob Willet, ICC’s Sigma Kappa Delta advisor, @ (309) 694-8479.

Come out to support your friends, Illinois Central College, and the advancement of the English language with SKD! And remember the SKD adage: Sincerity, Knowledge, Design.
