Cardiac Arrest Survivor Hosts CPR Event At ICC

Column by Micah Weidner

The emergency services (EMS) club hosted CPR lessons last week. 10 people showed up to be trained, many of whom were being trained for the first time.

They had dummies to practice on, as well as practice Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), which are devices that can shock hearts back into rhythm.

“It was a great thing to help out with, and I hope more things like it happen again,” says Jaden Clayton, a student who has helped with a similar Boy Scouts event.

I, Micah Weidner, am a certified CPR instructor and organizer of the event. My motivation for this event was personal experience. When I was 15 years old, I had a cardiac arrest in my room while playing Minecraft. My heart literally stopped beating.

My 13-year-old brother randomly walked into my room, realized what was going on, and promptly began CPR. He was taught how to do it at only 12 years old, at an after-school church group.

Thanks to his and my father’s efforts, I am alive with no brain damage.

My story proves three things: cardiac arrests can happen to anyone at any time, they are survivable if people provide quick CPR before emergency services arrive, and anyone can learn CPR.

That is why I organized the event. I want to teach the public this life-saving skill. Hopefully, events like this will end up saving some lives.

I will be writing an upcoming full-length article about my experience. Keep an eye out over the next two weeks.
