Saturday, August 27, Illinois Central College (ICC) Men’s Soccer team uses its home field advantage to put its first win in the bank. The Cougars defeated the Big Blue from Millikin University of Decatur with a final score(3-0) after back-to-back losses against two of the top ten teams in the nation. Head coach Gabriel Carreno has been strategically training the team to practice a united front in hopes of regaining ground in future games.
Antoni Llull Plomer, a sophomore international recruit from Spain, scored one of the winning points in Saturday’s game. The other points are accredited to Kwanele Khathi (Left), a freshman international recruit from South Africa, though, without the unified teamwork, it wouldn’t have been possible.
“If we coordinate as a team throughout the season, then there should be more goals coming in.”
Khathi said.
The Cougar defense was strong in the shutout victory over Millikin; something ICC hadn’t achieved yet this year. The defensive stand on Saturday is primarily due to ICC’s goalkeeping. Goalkeeper Tomas Fontes, a freshman international recruit from Portugal, practices strong vocal leadership skills on the field, directly impacting the team’s success.
“We can see the whole game and it’s always helpful to help our teammates; don’t let them fall asleep,”
Fontes states.
The Cougars hope to carry this momentum in their next home game against Heartland Community College on Tuesday, Aug 30.
