April 17th, 2019 – Harbinger Student Media staff attended a conference hosted by the Illinois Community College Journalism Association and brought home at least 5 awards. Our 1st place award was for our website. This award means a lot for us, as the future of journalism is now via the technology for publishing content online.

Workshops for photojournalism, news writing, social media strategies, and a keynote presentation by a Pulitzer prize winning journalist from the Chicago Tribune were among the main events.

Several Illinois community college student journalists were in attendance at the event to receive journalism awards in several categories. The keynote speaker was Ted Gregory, who shared advice and his very own personal ghost story. Ted also reinforced the fact that Illinois is America’s biggest microcosm.

Some of the skills and techniques discussed in the workshops, was writing news stories. The biggest takeaway for me on this subject was that breaking news is spontaneous, raw, and presented from a citizen’s perspective.

There was also an editor’s round table discussion in which every college in attendance was a part of sharing experiences, problem solving of everyday issues for journalists and media teams. Many at the open discussion also shared another common bond, as a modern journalist today needs versatility in several areas of journalism and media.
