East Peoria, Ill. – The lights descended on the CougarPlex on Sunday night for some soccer as the ICC Women’s Soccer team (7-3-0) took on the Eagles from Illinois Valley CC (0-7-1) for Sophomore Night.
The Cougars wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. At just 4:36, Kaylee Johnston (So. Midfielder – Peoria, Ill.) scored the game’s first goal. A mere 52 seconds later, fellow sophomore Claire Younker (Midfielder – Morton, Ill.) had the Cougars up two just under five minutes into the contest. Even that wasn’t it for ICC’s scoring in the first ten minutes. Ranked 10th in the entire country in goals scored, Izzy Mitra (Fr. Forward – Bloomington, Ill.) tacked on another, her 20th of the season, at the 7:18 mark, and just like that, it was 3-0.
Although Mitra was able to get a couple of shots off after that goal of hers, it was 10 minutes before the Cougars tallied their fourth goal, coming off a corner kick. It was Younker again, her second of the game, at roughly 17:34.
Johnston got a shot off the crossbar plus a shot from Sara McCoy that was saved, keeping the pressure on Illinois Valley CC’s keeper. ICC broke through again, and it was Mitra once more. Her second goal of the night made it 5-0 Cougars at 21:00.
ICC was able to get yet another goal before the half, with Younker getting a hat trick not five minutes after Mitra got her second, and that put ICC up a comfortable 6-0 after 45 minutes.
In the second half, Emma Mitchell (Fr. – Mattoon, Ill.) took over in goal for Christy Torrey (So. Goalkeeper – Pekin, Ill.).
It was another quick score for ICC, this one coming from Isabela Correr (Fr. Forward – Brazil) to make it 7-0. Then Savanna Bushman got in on the action, getting two shots within a minute of each other. Mitra got another chance at the goal with a shot that went high, then scoring her hat trick goal a the 59:38 spot, this one getting past the hands of the IVCC keeper, and that put the Cougars up 8-0. The final goal of the game was scored from Sara McCoy (So. Defenseman – Germantown Hills, Ill.) with 9:02 to go, and that set the final score of 9-0, in favor of the Cougars.
ICC has a couple of days off before traveling to the Corn Crib in Bloomington to take on Heartland College on October 3rd. Tonight was ICC’s last home game of the 2018 season, pending a potential postseason home date that is yet to be determined.
