Women’s Basketball #1 in D2

East Peoria, Ill. – It’s something that hasn’t happened since 2006, but the ICC women’s basketball team has just been ranked as the top team in the country, coming in at #1, while previous #1 Johnson Country dropped to #4.
The Cougars are currently on a 20-game win streak, having not lost since their season opener at North Iowa Area back on November 2nd. That means the count will be at 96 days since their last loss when the Cougars and rival Parkland tip off tomorrow at 5:30 pm.
Quite possibly the most impressive part about the (20-1) record so far is the strength of schedule. ICC is not playing exactly ‘easy’ opponents. Some examples include: a 45-point and 12-point win over #2 Kirkwood, a 7-point win over #5 North Iowa Area, a 70-65 win at Division 1 Moberly Area, a 2-point road win against #15 Lake Land, a nine-point road win over #11 South Suburban, and a big matchup with #9 Lincoln Land in Springfield is on the horizon (Saturday). That’s not even all of the most credible wins, either.
Currently, the Cougars are just shy of averaging 80 points per game, totaling 79.6 at the moment, good enough for 13th in the country. They have three players averaging 10 + points, those being Marquitta Easley (13.7 ppg), Abby Coates (13.2 ppg), and Summer Stoewer (11.9 ppg).
In terms of offensive statistics, one player is currently in the top five in the country. Abby Coates is currently shooting an impressive 61.5% from the field.
As a team, ICC is bringing in 48.1 rebounds per game. They also average about 20 assists for their average of 30 made shots per game.
Also worth noting, the ICC Men’s Basketball team cracked the polls for the first time this season, now ranked at #17.
The #1 women host Parkland on Wednesday night at 5:30 pm, with the #17 men immediately following at 7:30 pm.
