Used pumpkins given a smashing farewell

Recently, the ICC Student Association for the Environment (SAFE) hosted a pumpkin-smashing event in the parking lot of the Horticulture Land Lab at East Peoria campus, where students could bring their used Halloween gourds and give them a farewell with SAFE Club-made sledgehammers.

According to Thomas Hayner, co-advisor for the SAFE club, the event was a success.

“We have lots of students helping with volunteering and we’ve had lots of people come through and drop off their pumpkins,” Hayner said.

This event was created in order to dispose of used holiday pumpkins in an eco-friendly way, turning the produce into compost.

The SAFE club has more plans to help the environment around ICC, including performing maintenance on the trails at East Peoria campus, as well as removing invasive species from those trails.

The club also has a winter hike to Starved Rock planned.
