SKD Membership Increases Sharply
EAST PEORIA — A clarification in its entry requirements has led to many more students having the opportunity to join ICC’s Sigma Kappa Delta (SKD) chapter.
At their Feb. 18 new member induction ceremony, SKD inducted 38 students into their organization, which is considered the national English honor society for two-year colleges.
38 is a relatively large number considering that last semester they opted not to even have an induction because they would have only had about five students in attendance.
This rapid change was due to the correction of a small error in the program that checked students’ eligibility to join SKD. “There were certain requirements that were checked in the system for people to be eligible that weren’t our requirements,” said Kayli Ragains, co-president of SKD.
In total, they had more than 50 members join so far this semester of about 150 that were invited.
Qualified students may join SKD at any time. It is not necessary to have attended an induction ceremony, but Ragains values the experience gained with the ceremony.
“For me, induction made me feel important. It’s kind of like a celebration rewarding the student. Because getting good grades is an achievement,” said Ragains.
