A Look at ICC’s English Honor Society, Sigma Kappa Delta
Rebecca Richardson
Sigma Kappa Delta inducted new members on February 18th into their chapter. This exclusive English honor society is by invitation only and prospective members receive their letters towards the start of each new semester.
Sigma Kappa Delta was started specifically to provide two-year college students the opportunity to join an honor society that focused on English under the direction of Sigma Tau Delta. Members must meet stringent criteria including maintaining a 3.3 GPA or higher, have received a B or better in English and have taken a min. of one full semester at ICC or 12 credit hours.
Membership in an honor society increases a student’s chance of receiving scholarships, offers opportunities for community service and helps to elevate a student when applying for four year institutions and seeking full-time employment. Students develop valuable leadership skills by participating in events that help them stand out.
At ICC, members of SKD meet once a month to discuss ongoing community service projects and build a fellowship with other members. The Spring semester saw 45 new members inducted into the chapter. The current leadership is comprised of students at ICC, with Mary Lardizabal as President, Pornvalai Supatanakij as Vice President, Mehrpouya Movahadi, as Treasurer and Rebecca Richardson as Historian. Faculty advisers are Dr. Susan Hillabold and Sarah Parlier, instructors in the English and Language Studies department.
