Four Phi Theta Kappa Students Selected for Special Team

Four students in the ICC Phi Theta Kappa honors society have been selected for the prestigious All-Illinois Academic Team. Transfer students Silas Mattern and Hanna Moeller and workforce students Tionna Pauli and Kaleb Trone were chosen for the awards.

Four students from each Phi Theta Kappa chapter are chosen each year who both excel academically and are active within their community.

This April, there will be an awards banquet in Springfield called the President’s Breakfast where 20 students chosen for the nomination from across the state will each win $5 thousand.

All nominees will also be nominated for the Coca-Cola Academic Team and New Century Pathway scholarship programs.

“I was surprised when I received an email telling me that I was nominated,” says Silas Mattern, treasurer of the ICC Student Association For the Environment (S.A.F.E.) Club.

Mattern was not aware the All-Academic Team existed until he got his nomination, as he had only applied to the other scholarships available to Phi Theta Kappa students. “I applied for PTK scholarships without knowing I was adding myself to the selection of potential nominees,” he says.

“I have a passion for working with my community and seeking excellence in whatever I do. Hearing that I was nominated for the All-Illinois Academic Team was both a surprise and also a joyful realization that my community involvement and efforts have been recognized and are making an impact.” Mattern says.
