Recently, the One Book One College(OBOC) program announced their 2021-2022 book selection: One of Us is Lying By Karen McManus. You may be thinking to yourself, “What is the One bookOne College program?” Amy Glass is the coordinator of OBOC.
“A year-long interdisciplinary program engaging the ICC community through the reading and discussion of a shared book.”
Amy Glass said while describing the OBOC Program.
The ICC Library kicked off this program with the book Ready Player One by Ernest Cline in 2014-2015. Book selections are made by a team of librarians and faculty from several departments at ICC. You can check out their complete past selections list here.
This year they’ve selected Karen McManus’s book One of Us Is Lying, the first of an ongoing series, with the second book being titled One of Us is Next and a third coming soon 2023, titled One of Us is Back. During the zoom presentation “Everyone should meet Karen McManus,” her series was discussed, as well as the writing and publication process.
Some insight into McManus is that she has a master’s degree in Journalism from Northeastern University and her genre of writing is Thriller, Young Adult, and Contemporary. She’s written several other young adult novels including, Two can Keep a Secret, The Cousins and You’ll Be The Death of Me. Her books have been translated into over 40 different languages, and her One of Us Is Lying book turned into a tv show series streaming on the platform Peacock.
McManus started writing at the young age of eight by writing short fiction stories. As she grew older, she drifted away from creative writing. While sitting in an airport awaiting a flight to Oregon, she picked up the book The Hunger Games. She fell in love with the book and its characters; this inspired her to return to creative writing again.
