Illinois Central College Hosts Artists from Different Sides of the Globe
By Rebecca Schlosser
Throughout the month of November and the beginning of December, Illinois Central College has been host to two artists in both of their galleries. One being in the Technology Center, across from Cafe Breve and the other in the Performing Arts Center.
In Gallery 336B, Martin Nyarko presents his exhibit of mixed media titled “My First Play”. He creates pieces of art out of materials that can be found every day. His media includes soda cans, plastic bags and burlap. The most prominent piece in the exhibit was a dress made out of soda cans that is titled “Wedding Not Marriage and Enthroned.” Although it is not his most recent piece, viewers seemed to be enthralled the most by that one. Other pieces in the exhibit included “Corn Rows” a mixed media piece made from burlap and plastic bags. His goal is to make conventional objects into prized possessions.
In the Performing Arts Center at ICC, Stella Zee’s artwork is displayed prominently upon walking in. Her pieces are a mix of floral and surreal. Upon looking at her pieces, one can see brilliant floral designs but on a closer look, the viewer can see the small animals and other small creatures that are hidden in the petals of the flowers. They are not able to be seen immediately, but once they are, the pieces take on a whole new life. The artist’s love of color is evident in her paintings.
