ICC’s Got Talent! a Hit on Campus
EAST PEORIA — On Wednesday, May 7th, 2014, the ICC Campus Activities Board hosted its annual ICC’s Got Talent! show. Approaching the end of the semester, the show is part of the CAB’s De-Stress Week, where campus-wide activities and events hope to alleviate pressures that come with end-of- semester obligations.
The free show took place on the lawn in front of the Academic Building from 11:00am-2:00pm. There were 15 performances featured by ICC students and one guest performer. The ICC Agribusiness Club sold pork chop sandwiches and the ICC CAB sold ice cream, popsicles, and soda. They had Baha Blast in cans. It used to be that you could only get that stuff at Taco Bell.
Jason LeVasseur, the guest performer and emcee, kicked the show off with two impromptu acoustic songs and a Beatles cover. Immediately charismatic and laugh-seeking, Jason got the crowd ready for the show to get going.
The show featured many notable talents in a variety of acts. An early treat was Sound Focus, a fantastic quartet of young singers. These guys could only sing about 3 songs, but busted out a Hercules song to close with. An entrancing alto and a really nice group.
Another impressive act was the breakdancing of Roy Johnson – who will not stay out of this publication; this is his third appearance in the Harbinger for the year – and two of his friends. Having shown his breakdancing and other talents earlier in the semester, Johnson displayed utmost confidence and coolness when busting out those funky moves.
For the ones who like their tunes slower, there was Marquise Henderson. This guy performed original r&b jamsinspiredby“Marvin Gaye, John Mayer, and Usher.” Audience response was red hot for this dude’s coolness. Singer/songwriter D.W. Myers also slowed things down with a cool solo acoustic set.
For those who need their music loud, local rockers The Black Roses were a perfect change of pace. A prominent and fun local act, these guys excel at loud, simple rock-and- roll inspired by 60s powerpop. They played two groovy originals and one lively cover, all with catchy choruses and dance-worthy goodness. They were definitely the loudest act, as they were one of a few full bands on the bill.“They were so loud…and fun” confirmed art student Elliot Miller. The band took third place in the competition.
There were plenty of great acts besides those mentioned. Samantha Thomas and Ray, who took first and second place respectfully, blew the crowd away with their peformances.
