ICC’s Clery Report Has Been Released

This year’s ICC Annual Security and Fire Safety report was released last month to let students and faculty know about incidents campus police handled. This report covered incidents over the last three years. The report showed no noticeable increase in crimes at ICC, with most incidents being related to theft under $500.

All colleges and universities that receive federal funding are mandated by the Clery Act to provide a public annual security report every year by October 1st. This report must include the incidents of criminal offenses, hate crimes, violence related to domestic relationships, stalking, and referrals for disciplinary actions. ICC includes incidents of theft, which is not mandated by the Clery Act.

The East Peoria campus has the most reported incidents, with the majority of said incidents happening in student housing. In 2022, East Peoria campus saw 16 incidents of theft under $500, however last year’s theft incidents had gone down to three. Campus police recommends students to not leave bags and valuables unattended, and to ensure car doors are locked and any valuables in cars are hidden.

The Peoria campus only had three reported incidents, all of which were related to theft. The Pekin campus had no reported incidents.

To report incidents of any kind, students can go directly to campus police, or use the new LiveSafe app available for students, faculty, and staff. The LiveSafe app allows students to have a direct line to campus police to report emergencies, non-emergencies, or any suspicious activity.

“[On the LiveSafe app] it’s very easy to click a button and call us, or text our dispatch and they text right back because it pops up on a computer with a sound,” ICC Chief of Police, Erika Schwiderski, said. “Sometimes we’ll even see people send pictures of something, if they saw something suspicious. This [app also] allows for video or audio. Sometimes we will get loud noise complaints and they will record it while they’re sending it. Because that way, if we show up and it’s totally quiet, they have shown that [they] really are calling for a loud noise. We want people to download [the app] because it has got all those resources on there.”

The LiveSafe app also provides links to mental health resources, basic needs resources, and the Emergency Response Guide. Anyone who attends ICC or uses ICC’s facilities is encouraged to download the LiveSafe app.
