ICC Volleyball Breaks Even at Home Tournament

The NJCAA Div. II no. 12 ranked Illinois Central College Volleyball team concluded a home tournament over the weekend going 2-2.  They are now 12-10 on the year.

ICC faced two ranked teams in the NJCAA poll along with two unranked teams  The two ranked teams included no. 7 ranked Lincoln Land Community (15-4) and no. 15 ranked Sauk Valley Community College (14-1) while the unranked teams were Southwestern Illinois College (10-7) and South Suburban College (4-18).  The four teams entered the tournament with a combined record of 43-30.

The Cougars were able to win their first match against SWIC 3 sets to 1.  Freshman Brooke Jacobs lead the way with 10 kills, sophomore Megan Beutke had 30 digs, and sophomore Katie Kupferschmid had 3 service aces that helped the team rally to win the first set.

They lost a tough match to Lincoln Land 3 sets to 1.  Freshman Whitney Nichols contributed with 16 kills and 3 aces.  Sophomore Michelle Kelly had 16 digs while three others finished with at least 10.

The first match on Day 2 started off well as the Cougars beat South Suburban in straight sets.  Sophomore Anna Crank had a big game that included 10 kills and 16 digs. Beutke added another 17 digs and freshman Darian Baldwin had 4 aces along with her 20 assists.

Their weekend concluded by winning the first two sets against Sauk Valley only to drop the last three.  Crank and Jacobs both had big games with 14 kills, 16 digs and 11 kills, 17 digs respectively.  Five Cougars had at least 10 digs in the losing effort.

ICC will host another tournament including four other teams on the weekend of Oct. 16.
