The Student Association For the Environment (SAFE) club at Illinois Central College (ICC) hosted a viewing of the documentary “Can We Save the Reef?” on Wednesday, Feb. 23.
The documentary, released in 2017, focuses on a group of scientists who investigate the reduction of the Great Barrier Reef and attempt to figure out how to save coral reefs in preparation for rising ocean temperatures.
Members of SAFE, managed by Kristin Flex, take part in environmental projects similar to the scientists in the documentary. These include restoring trails and cleaning river beds. SAFE is one of ICC’s longest-running clubs, first starting in the 1970s after ICC’s opening in 1967.
“You’re with people who are like-minded. It’s kind of a support group for people who care about the planet,” Flex said.
In the near future, SAFE is building bluebird houses to encourage bluebird nesting and will be putting them up around campus in the next few weeks. SAFE is also hosting an environmental fashion show on Mar. 11 at 7 p.m. in the PAC building. The fashion show will encourage the use and purchasing of clothing that will help lessen the impact on the environment, such as thrifting or shopping from eco-friendly brands like Patagonia.
“It’s an opportunity for students to come and collaborate on environmental issues and find solutions,” said student Alex Van Slyke.
Despite setbacks from COVID-19 in recent semesters, SAFE continues to grow and see new members joining each week. SAFE hosts meetings Fridays at 1 p.m. in room 318E.
“We’re always looking for new members and welcome anybody interested,” said Flex.
