Cougars Golf Anchored By Fresh Five
EAST PEORIA — Once again it is that time of the year at Illinois Central College’s Home-Golf Course Quail Meadows. The fairways are moist, the greens are freshly trimmed, and the treacherous rough is as thick as crabgrass. Zachary Jewell, Tyler Johnson, Samuel Klooster, Robert McBride, and Quinn Zircher are all freshmen. With a five out of six member freshmen squad, Coach Bo Ryan could only hope the lack of experience would not send them searching through crabgrass all year long. But all’s it takes is a great coach and one sophomore like Jake Schneider to lead by example in order to boost other teammates moral.
Great leadership has been represented by numerous accolades on the course thus far in the season. The Cougars picked up their first win of the year at the Iowa Wesleyan Classic on April 7. The Cougars continued the success by finishing 3rd overall as a team in the MWAC Conference Championship April 12-13, at Lick Creek Golf Course in Pekin.
Many make the argument that inexperience will always end with failure in golf, which is true if one holds that pessimistic lifestyle.
Golf is a mental game that must be approached with optimism. If the Cougars golf team had believed the cynical views of disbelievers at the beginning of the year, than who knows how many of those awards they would own. All that concerns the members of the Cougars knows that they are more than perceived. The jump to number 22 NJCAA DII Team in the nation may feel like a dream but in fact this complete a view on reality.
