Cougars Baseball cruises past Lincoln College
Alex Staab – ICC Harbinger
East Peoria, IL – A perfect fall afternoon for baseball at the CougarPlex Wednesday evening as the Illinois Central College Cougars hosted the Lincoln College Lynx.
David Zoz started out on the hill for the Cougars. He went 2 innings and only allowed 1 base runner on a walk. Things started going for ICC in the bottom half of that second inning, all started with an RBI single by freshman Lucas Ketcham. Ketcham’s base hit wasn’t all the Cougars were able to push across that half. RBI hits from Trevor Davis and Seth Burger as well as a run on a wild pitch had ICC leading Lincoln College after two innings of play, 4-0. ICC Head Coach Brett Kelley was quite pleased with the offensive effort from his team, but also added after the game that there are still some things to work on in this young fall season.
“That shows that we’re pretty capable of scoring and keeping ourselves in games. We’ve still got a lot of things to work on offensively.”
The Cougars continued to make some noise in the bottom half of the third, as and RBI groundout for Anthony Berumen put ICC on top, 5-1, as Lincoln College had scored on an RBI single in the top half of that inning.
ICC was able to tack on a decent amount of runs in the fourth. With one out in the bottom half, the bases were loaded for Beau Collier, and he delivered. Collier hit a 2-run single, and reached second on a throw. At that point, the Cougars were ahead by 6.
The Cougars eventually started showing their power in the sixth inning, as sophomore Dylan Lonteen was able to hit one out to left-center field, and put ICC up 8-1. Despite such a good offensive effort from the Cougars, even that wasn’t enough for the team, let alone Lonteen. Just two innings later, Lonteen hit an RBI triple off the wall, which put ICC up 9-1.
In the final inning of a 10-inning contest, a great catch was made my sophomore Alex Peters to end the top half. All that was left in the game was three outs, but there was more left in the tank for the Cougars’ offense.
After a hit by pitch, a chance came for freshman Adam Christianson to do some damage, and he certainly did. Christianson hit a 2-run home run over the right field fence to set the final score at 11-1.
Coach Kelley mentioned that in the fall, the Cougars are sort of just getting their feet wet for the spring season.
“In the fall, we like to move guys around. We’ve put a couple guys out in the outfield that have played there a little bit.”
He also mentioned after the game that as a result of a hit by pitch in the last home game for the Cougars, sophomore Ben Main broke his nose. No return date has been mentioned.
The Cougars have a series of away games before they return home September 23rd. However, we will have full coverage and a story from the September 20th game at Spoon River.
