His series of images has been featured in colleges and universities throughout the Midwest. Hopkins received his bachelor of fine arts in 1985 from the The School of the Art Institute in Chicago and currently resides in the Chicago area. Since 2010 his painting and drawings have been part of permanent collections including The Art Institute of Chicago, the University of Ann Arbor, Michigan and Notherwestern University in Evanston. He also has permanent collections in several museums including the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Pete, FL, and the Milwaukee Art Museum. According to Mills, his art features “things that I can’t seem to get my mind off of until I have finished painting them.” His exhibit A Few of My Favorite Things represents visual metaphors for identity, self-preservation and mortality that emerge from the examination of common objects and how they relate to an “intimate” human condition. Mills has participated in group and solo exhibitions across the U.S. including, South Carolina, New York, Georgia, Kentucky, California, Louisiana, Florida and North Carolina.
