East Peoria, IL – It was a new fall season for Illinois Central College softball, as they opened with the Spoon River Snappers Sunday afternoon at the CougarPlex.

Things got off to a quick start, just not for the Cougars. With Freshman Katie David in the circle, she gave up a 2-run home run, and the Snappers were out to a 2-0 lead.

The game started to really get going in the second frame for ICC, on both the defensive and offensive sides. A good play by sophomore Abbey Stoller at third base highlighted things on the defense for the Cougars. ICC was able to get the bats working quickly in the bottom half. A double from freshman Megan Adams started things. Eventually, the bases were loaded for sophomore Paige Lane, who drew a walk and Adams scored to put ICC within one of the Snappers, 2-1. That was just the start for the Cougars. A groundout from Stoller scored Kayla Ford, and just like that, the Cougars had tied it, 2-2. A great game was had by the Cougar freshmen, as the next action was an RBI single from Lou McWhirter to give ICC the 3-2 lead. It was back to the sophomores to conclude action in the second, as Shelby Terrell got an RBI single to give the Cougars the 4-2 lead over Spoon River.

The Snappers answered right back in the top half, scoring two runs and evening the score at 4-4. The Cougars weren’t able to get the bats going at the rate they had the last inning, stranding two runners and holding the score where it was.

David was done in the circle for ICC after three innings of work. She gave up 3 hits and walked 3, along with being charged the four runs Spoon River had scored thus far. She was replaced by a fellow freshman, Megan Adams, from Moline.

A fairly inactive fourth inning followed as both the Snappers and Cougars went 1-2-3. It was ICC’s turn to make some noise again, this time in the fifth frame. A double for Kayla Ford got things off to a good start. Then Lexi Trammell got all the way to third on an error by the Spoon River first baseman, scoring Ford and setting the final score of 5-4 Cougars.

The Cougars Softball team is still in action Sunday, as they take on their archrivals, the Parkland Cobras, at 3:00 pm.
